Looking after children in a childcare or education setting, you'll know that you take responsibility every day for the health and wellbeing of the children and infants in your care. You'll be only too well aware of the wide range of illnesses and injuries that you can encounter. So you'll want to make sure you have the best training in place for you and your staff, so that you can respond quickly and in the right way each time a situation arises.

The right course to meet your needs

We offer several different paediatric-focused first aid courses, so that you have the choice of the best option to meet your needs. The course that best suits you and your setting will depend on a number of factors, including some or all of the following:

  • The children that you care for
  • The environment you work in
  • Your the number of staff requiring training
  • The amount of time you have available for your staff to be in face-to-face training
  • Whether you prefer fully face-to-face or blended learning
  • Whether you'd prefer courses on your premises or at one of our venues in Bedfordshire.

2-day Paediatric First Aid Course (Level 3 RQF)

Duration: 12 hours
Format: Face-to-face

Who is it for?

Our 2-day Paediatric course is particularly suitable for those who need the an Ofqual-regulated (RQF) course that meets the requirements of Ofsted and the Department for Education's EYFS Framework, including:

  • Teachers & Teaching Assistants
  • Other School Staff
  • Groups of Childminders
  • Youth group leaders
  • Scout and guide leaders
  • Others working with children up to eight years

Day 1 Content

  • Understand the role of a paediatric first aider
  • Be able to assess an incident
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and child who is unresponsive and breathing normally (recovery position)
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally (CPR)
  • Be able understand the importance of, and be able to use an AED (automated external defibrillator)
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
  • Be able to provide first aid to an infant who is wounded and bleeding
  • Know how to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and child with: bites, stings, small cuts, grazes, bumps & bruises, small splinters and nose bleeds

Unit 1 also includes practical assessments for CPR and AED for children and infants, recovery position, choking and wounds and bleeding. Finally, you will complete a multiple choice questionnaire which covers other aspects of the unit.

Day 2 Content

On the second day, you will complete Unit 2 entitled "Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury". In this unit, you will learn how to provide first aid to an infant and child:

  • with a suspected fracture and a dislocation
  • with a head, neck or back injury
  • with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
  • with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness
  • who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold
  • with burns and scalds
  • who has been poisoned
  • who has sustained an electric shock

Unit 2 also includes one practical assessment (Management of Fractures) and one multiple choice questionnaire.

Additional Qualification Information

This qualification and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council (UK) and Skills for Health Assessment Principles for First Aid Qualifications, and is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Department for Education's EYFS Framework.

This qualification is for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide first aid to children (including babies) when dealing with an emergency situation, chronic or sudden paediatric illness or Paediatric injury.


It comprises 2 mandatory units with a total value of 2 credits. On successful completion candidates are awarded a certificate that is valid for three years.

How long is it?

Minimum contact teaching hours apply to this qualification. The training takes 12 hours, usually delivered in two full days, but by arrangement this can be split into more sessions (additional charges apply).

How is it delivered?

Full Face-to-face - in your setting:

In this mode, it's delivered in two 6-hour training days (usually starting at 9am). By arrangement this can be split into more sessions (additional charges apply). It is primarily available on your premises in the East Anglia, Greater London and Midlands areas. However if you have a specific requirement, do get in touch, and we'll let you know if we can travel out to you, and will provide you with a quote including all training, course materials, certificates and expenses.


Full Face-to-face - at our venue in Bedford:

This is the same course as above, however we run periodic courses at our venue in Bedford. This can be more cost-effective if you have between one and four staff who need their training. Blended Paediatric First Aid Course (Level 3 RQF)

Duration: 6 + 6 hours
Format: Online + Face-to-face

Who is it for?

Our 12-hour blended Paediatric course is suitable for the same audience as the 2-day course above, but has the benefit of only requiring one day of face-to-face training. The remainder of the content is taught through an online module that you can start, pause and resume as often as you like for the duration of your licence.

This benefits those who find it more difficult to block out full days of training for staff, have limited training room availability, or who like to learn online at their own pace.

Online Course Syllabus

The online portion of the course is always done first - it covers the following:

  • Roles and responsibilities, definitions, infection control, accident reporting and PPE
  • Incident and casualty assessment
  • Hypoxia
  • Shock
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Meningitis and sepsis
  • Management of a seizure
  • Febrile convulsions
  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Poisons
  • Burns & scalds
  • Electric shock
  • Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Head, neck and spinal injuries
  • Foreign bodies (eyes, ears & nose)
  • Eye injuries
  • Extremes of hot and cold
  • Minor injuries

Face-to-face Course Syllabus

The face-to-face day provides enhanced learning carrying on from the e-learning module, and adds practical and multiple choice assessments. The content includes:

  • A continuation of roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Incident and casualty assessment
  • CPR and AED - recognition and treatment for an infant and child who are not breathing normally
  • Unconscious casualty - recognition and treatment of an infant and child who are breathing normally
  • Recognition and treatment of a choking casualty
  • Bleeding and shock - recognition, assessment and treatment of a bleeding casualty
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Anaphylaxis, including adrenaline autoinjector practical assessment
  • Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Head, neck and spinal injuries

Additional Qualification Information

This is awarded as the same qualification as the 2-day course above and so is again based on the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council (UK) and Skills for Health Assessment Principles for First Aid Qualifications. it also meets the requirements of the Department for Education's EYFS Framework.

How long is it?

Both your online module and the face-to-face training will take around 6 hours each to complete, so your training overall will be the same 12 hours as the full face-to-face course.

How is it delivered?

Blended (online + face-to-face) - in your setting:

Your first 6 hours of training will take place online. This can be started, paused and resumed as often as you like. You have 90 days to complete the course from the date that you first register .The online module must be completed prior to your face-to-face training. Your face-to-face module is a combination of theory and practical, including assessments, and takes 6 hours to complete.


Blended (online + face-to-face) - at our venue in Bedford:

This is the same course as above, however we run the face-to-face element periodically at our venue in Bedford. If you don't see a date to suit you on our Bedfordshire course schedule, don't worry - get in touch and we'll do our best to help.

1-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid Course (Level 3 RQF)

Duration: 6 hours
Format: Face-to-face

Who is it for?

Our 1-day Emergency Paediatric course is suitable for those who need a good understanding of emergency first aid for children and infants but who don't need training on the full EYFS Framework syllabus. For example it would be suitable for:

  • Parents and family members
  • Staff not required to meet the full EYFS and Ofsted requirements for a 2-day course
  • Those assisting with childcare, but not in sole charge of groups of under-8's

Course Content

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Assessing an incident
  • Providing first aid for an infant and child who is unresponsive and breathing normally (recovery position)
  • Providing first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally (CPR)
  • Understanding and using an AED (automated external defibrillator)
  • Choking
  • Dealing with external bleeding, shock, minor injuries and stings

This course includes both practical and multi-choice assessments.
